Buying a home or build a home in todays market?

Hello Everyone, I would like to receive some help. My wife and I are looking at buying our first house. Ideally we would like to live in Johnson County, Ks as it is close to work for both of us but willing to drive (20ish min) if needed. With homes so highly priced and everything going over asking, would it be better to build a house? It seems there would be less competition and I could get new for the same price as most other homes. My dad and I have built and remodeled homes before and we could save $ by doing some work ourselves and hiring out when needed.

I have other options so I’m just curious to hear your thoughts.
