Certified Property Manager (CPM)

Hi BP Nation,

Has anyone (especially professional property managers) taken the time to get a CPM? I'm a big fan of education and I might be able to get the course paid for by my employer, but I want to make sure I'm not wasting my time. I would like to start a property management company someday. Is this certificate useful? Did you learn a lot when you took the course?

Thanks in advanced!

Hi @Benjamin Beyer, I am a PM and have recently decided to pursue this certification.  I am one that LOATHES certifications and accreditations in the real estate space -- as you are well aware the vast majority of acronyms in residential are simply inconvenient yearly fees you pay for a three letter blurb after your name and a logo; truly NOT something residential buyers and sellers in most markets know/care about and not something that sharpens your craft.

Not so in management.  As you walk through the day to day operations in property management you'll be faced with MANY pitfalls and conundrums that specialized training will benefit you on.  Moreover it will reduce your liability in operations in some ways AND may enable you to manage more properties as a result of the accreditation thanks to an overall more educated consumer base.

I'd say if your employer would pay for it then jump!
