Printer for Direct Mail and REI office use?

Anyone recommend a printer for REI office use and direct mailing? Something that has cheap ink refills in the $100-350 range.

Also do you recommend Black and White or Color? Inkjet or Laser and why?

I plan on printing hundreds if not thousands of letters, address lables, etc. I was also wondering if it's cheaper to go to a printing shop or online somewhere (local print shop or kinkos/ fedex/staples) to get these sorts of things printed versus an at home printer?

I already have a separate scanner so it doesn't need scanning capabilities.
