Property Taxes in Jackson County Causing Huge Spike in Tax Delinquency

I thought I would pass along this post on Facebook from Preston Smith regarding the insane property tax increases in 2023 in Jackson County, MO (Kansas City). It looks like from the numbers he's crunched that property tax delinquency (and thereby, likely mortgage delinquency) is more than 50% the national average or thereabout.

Today I was doing some additional number-crunching on the delinquency data that I got from the County a couple of weeks ago. When I broke this down by State Senate district, it showed that in Senator Washington's district the rate is 15.6% and in Senator Nicola's district it was 8.1%. Countywide, the delinquency rate is 8.3%. The most recent tax delinquency data that I could find was for 2021 showed that the national rate then was 5.9%. If we get the percentage of mortgage delinquency for 2023, the rate was 3.8%.

(I admit this is not exactly apples to apples, but if you aren't able to make your house payment, it is likely you can't pay the taxes either, and visa versa.)

THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!! In Jackson County, we could have a delinquency rate that is nearly TWO OR THREE TIMES the national rate for tax or mortgage delinquency. Think about that: The percentage increases that we've seen since 2019 have been unprecedented, and now the delinquency rates are also far beyond anything else in this country.

If you live in Sen. Washington's district, and have a chance to talk with her about this, please do. Taxpayers in her district are hurting.
