Where Did your RE journey begin?

I wanted to start a forum asking where everyone started their RE investing journeys, what steps they took along the way, and one recommendation for new beginners such as myself. 

I'm particularly interested in buying and holding for the long term and building up my rental property portfolio. I do not currently own any properties, but am looking forward to buying one within the next 12 months.
