starting from scratch

Dear all, 

I was just wondering if anyone started completely from scratch. 

I'm drafting a business case around with this idea to build a modern 4 unit apartment. i would appreciate anyone who instead of buying decided to build either a multifamily unit or an apartment building. I wondered if anybody has tips and recommendation especially regarding financing, cost to consider, a strategy etc
