Flip a few first or owner occupy a multi?

Ultimately I'd like to be involved in both. I'm curious though what the community thinks. Is it faster, safer, smarter to flip a few properties first for the faster cash influx, (assuming it works out) take that $ and reinvest or acquire a 3 or 4plex to owner occupy for a year then repeat until you have 10 or 15 doors? I'm going to assume it's all personal preference but I'd like to hear people's reasons for one path or the other.
