Hi, my HVAC in Birmingham AL got stolen. Is it doable to replace the HVAC system with just windows/wall AC unit ? The quote I receive for 2.5ton heat pump system is around ~5k. Pretty expensive. Not sure what's the alternatives.

 Thoughts:

1. What are you going to do for heat?

2. Why not just put a cage around the unit after you get it replaced? They make lockable cages that sit in concrete. Not completely foolproof for someone with a reciprocating saw and time but the noise and time will make most thieves move on. I have one that I inherited on a property (in a ridiculously safe area, no less) and it's pretty solid and would be a bear to steal the unit.

3. How will 70's tenement-style window units make your place appear next time you want to rent it out?

4. If the neighborhood is so bad that thieves just walk up and take off with your heating unit, should you own this property?
