Curious On How You Handle Closing and Possession?

Hey all I'm curious to hear any stories where you closed on a property while the seller was still living in it, this is something I recently had to deal with and all worked out well. For my first deal I didn't want to deal with holding back escrows. So we just moved the closing back to after they were moved out. I'm curious what you all on here would recommend when dealing with a seller who is living in the property and not wanting to move out? Was what I did overly cautious? Does it not really matter?
