Contact management software suggestions?

Question

I haven't seen any recent posts on this topic. I am looking for a free or very low cost contact manager. I don't use outlook for my e-mail. I just want to be able to create a contact, assign a category (ie agent, contractor, wholeseller, etc), make some notes and add some follow-up dates. The primary point is not for tracking leads although it would be good to be able to grow into that. Should be interactive with mobile device so I can enter new contacts from phone or PC and have data available on both.

I checked out zoho.com. So far I don't see a good way to add the categories I want (see above).

@Michael Quarles -- wow ... that is a lot of good stuff all in one place.  Thanks!  I would just need to figure out how to access this from my phone.  It doesn't look like they have an app .. just says that since this is web-based you can access it from anywhere.  In theory I suppose I could just log on from my phone's browser. Do you know if that's the only option?

ah, i see..  You'll have to use different Google products to accomplish that..  You appmts could be synced from   the google calendar to your phone or whatever..  You'll just have to input  the info from  google  contacts  to  google calendar to do the reminders..   Does  that make sense?

Basically, I'm just using the blunt ax approach, i.e. raw storage with a few categories. I did a search but I don't see where it can be synced to be reminded of follow up dates. I just started fooling around with it after reading your post to see if I add a date if it will show up in my Google Calendar.
