CCIM Education

I'm trying to get into real estate investing, and I have had people tell me to get a CCIM designation. I was told that it is a great couple of courses on financial analysis for all types of real estate investing. However, I have a civil engineering degree with no financial education. The CCIM seems like something for experienced folks in the industry, not for someone getting started. Does anyone have some advice for where would be a good place to start on getting the basics needed for the CCIM courses? I do plan on taking these courses one day because of the recommendations I have received. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.
