Today marks a milestone in the industry. It's time to end the BS about making money in Real Estate! Yes it is very possible to make money, in fact a LOT of money, but you need to learn it as a real BUSINESS, not a passtime after a rip roaring party at an extremely overpriced Bus Tour. These Gurus have devastated lives, and taken lives! It's time to put this "Art of RIPOFFISM" to rest with a proverbial silver dagger through the heart. They are falling hard. Trump, and I believe Fortune Builders, and next, the self proclaimed "Rockstar", Armando...

I could not agree with you more. I spent the past 5 years investigating fraud related to real estate for the State of Ohio. Every case of fraud always involved a guru some how, whether they were personally involved in the investigation or had taught the person how to do it (usually the case). In the situations where there was a "student" that had committed the fraud they usually did it not knowing they were committing a crime, whether regulatory or criminal. I hope that this lawsuit is only the beginning as the "gurus" need to go, they have been around for a long time.

I think there is a line to be drawn for every personal situation. If you can get in a focused group, and be able to network with a group of like minded individuals, and not be out of pocket too much. It can be worth it if you are dedicated to taking action. Don't invest into a gurus network if you don't have the capital to invest in real deals. Don't go into real estate broke and with no money. Don't go with guys on national commercials, but find a group that isn't going to break the bank to network with close to home.

No one is more disgusted with rip off gurus than I am. Which is why I'm on BP and contribute to GREA!

There will always be the poor, the naive and the ignorant, there will always be predators to prey on them as well.

I offered a course on options, IMO it was worth hundreds of dollars as it drilled down beyond what investors generally think of and provided current information.......and I offered it for less than you'd pay for a good hamburger at lunch! It was far from a great success, I don't mind saying and I pulled it off the internet.

Had I put a price on it of, say, $695.00, it probably would have sold much better as the "student" or "investor" would then perceive value with the information. Purely marketing and psychology.

The best "silver dagger" is good education, but most are looking for a quick and easy buck so they won't arm themselves to get into this arena.

Gurus sell perceptions, the product is a by-product of content that supports the hype and justifies the perception sold. You might pay $65 for a polo shirt, but you might buy the same shirt out of the same factory without the logo for $12.00, but what people buy is perception, it plays to their ego, not common sense.

That's where your "mega buck" products come in, we are trained to think we reap greater rewards by spending more money for something, perception! But, perception is not always reality and isn't in guru products.

A good education can only come from someone who is better educated and experienced than the student is. It can be very hard for someone who doesn't know something to find someone who really does know, who is actually qualified to give instruction. What you're likely to get going to groups are others who may have more experience but they still lack on the education side, what they do and say can be totally wrong, so it's a case of the blind leading the blind usually. And, in these groups, the newbie is still basing their decision to follow a leader based on their perception, not knowledge as that is what is lacking.

Where does the guru establish credibility? By perception of having been successful making money. What you're probably looking at is two one hundred dollar bills wrapped around 50 one dollar bills. So, now we have a perception based on an assumption, since most getting into real estate are chasing the dollar, perceiving that your guru has money equals success which translates into their instruction as being valuable.

Last point, newbies set themselves up to fail being led by their perception and assumptions based on what is spun by guru hype. Kinda like a teenage boy who follows a pretty girl in hopes of fulfilling his desires instead of using the head on his shoulders and common sense, perception gets him in trouble and the wrong assumption gets his face slapped. It takes time to find a good partner or mentor or teacher. Basing your selection of an instructor in business on quickly formed perceptions and assumptions are usually a mistake. :)
