Tesla to bring more jobs, companies to Austin than expected

Tesla executives have pledged to create at least 5,000 jobs at the $1.1 billion plant. But its expansion into Central Texas is poised to have a much larger impact on the region's workforce, in the form of more jobs from Tesla as well from its many suppliers, according to a panel discussion during the second annual East Austin Growth Summit on Oct. 29.

Ed Latson, executive director of the Austin Regional Manufacturers Association, said during the discussion that closer to 15,000 jobs could be created at the gigafactory because of the scope of the carmaker's planned operations.

"That’s where the major multiplier effect of their impact is going to happen," he said. "They have a reputation of wanting their suppliers close to them, and they’re going to make that request for critical suppliers. So, I wouldn’t be shocked if we had 50-plus companies move here to support this facility. My hope is that those 50 come but that they also find another 50 that are already here.
