I recommend learning as much as you can from books and this site before looking for a mentor. If you want someone who is going to help you and not just try to get money out of you. Start taking action and go to all the REI meetings you can. There are many free ones. There is a lot of new people there and if you are asking the "basics" from someone they are going to get board with you. If you are taking action and have something to really show you are trying, you will find someone that can help you get the rest of the way.
