Value-adding a unit to a multi unit in Allegheny County

Kimberly Reed
Posted

Anyone have experience adding a unit to a legal multi unit in Allegheny County? For example, if I were to add another unit to a legal triplex, by converting a basement into another unit, or adding an apartment over a garage, do I need to update anything with the county in regards to the occupancy permit? Or changing a duplex to a triplex? If so, what is that process, and could you give some insight into whether it is typically easy or difficult to do? Thanks!

@Kimberly Reed it can be a huge task to add units. Please before you do anything check with the local code enforcement office to see what is allowed.  In MOST case NOT ALL you will NOT be able to add a unit to an existing structure. Its not impossible. I have seen it done but its not an easy thing and its also not likely you are in the correct zoning and that your structure will pass all the code laws in effect.
