$250,000 owed in back taxes

I'm talking with a seller who owes $250,000 in back taxes. I want to buy the house but at $250k to bring the taxes current there's no room for profit. Can I negotiate with the town? I've spoken with 2 town employees who say the town wont take possession and that someone will eventually buy it and pay the taxes.  I'd like to speak with the town treasurer/collector and negotiate.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

@Sarah Loomis

Hi Sarah,

Take a drive over to the Tax Office in the morning and go visit with the HEAD Tax Official and discuss the situation in person. Anything else is just guessing.

Good Luck!
