Short sale transition to note buying?

I know nothing of note buying. I'll say that right up front. I do know about short sales and have quite a few under contract right now. Can someone explain the benefit of buying the note over the short sale? What is the process and is it logical to think to transition to note buying? I've seen 4 of my properties go to foreclosure in the past two months.
Thanks.
