Creaky Hardwood floors

Aiden James
Posted

I recently bought my first three units building. The middle unit has a hardwood floor and it makes a squeaky noise when someone walks on the floor. This noise is coming throughout the whole unit floor. However, I wanted to install vinyl plank so I took advice from many contractors but their opinion was not the same. Some advice to install vinyl on top of the hardwood floor with insulation to avoid that noise and other suggested to remove the hardwood floor completely and fix the underneath part before installing vinyl. Any thoughts?

I'm not a flooring expert but I believe the hardwood creaks because it's moving. That can be fixed by nailing it down and securing it. I don't know if vinyl plan on top of hardwood would stop the creaking completely, but it would certainly help. Removing hardwood would require you to then lay down a new subflooring, then put down the vinyl plank. That's a big expense.
