Black Mastic & Paper over old hardwood - removal ?

I am working on a house built in 1910. It is mostly original (my fave) and it will be lovely when done.

However the old owner had glued down 12x12 Linoleum tiles over the entire house. The tiles have been removed and i am left with black mastic and black paper covering 80% of the floor (yes its been tested)

The floor guys tried sanding and they were not happy with what it did to their machine.

My neighbor says she rented a sander from HD was able to remove all her mastic and then redo the floors- I dont know if her mastic was as pervasive as mine.

I have tried heat - blow dryer works great - but would take many years to complete ;)

Does anyone have any methods that will remove the mastic without using oil?

Has anyone been successful sanding it off?

I am having anxiety about covering this lovely floor with crap modern wood :(

Thank you in advance!
