View from living room. Shelf & cabinet with red X going away.

Rehabbing a house we just bought, and we're trying to decide what to do with the cabinets. They are just plywood boxes, built in place, but they are still in good shape, though very ugly. Here is what we have already decided:

Keeping the range, as it is in good condition, but the range hood and dishwasher are being replaced.
Wallpaper is going far, far away, replaced with a tile backsplash. (My DIY specialty)
New lights & ceiling fan
New flooring - vinyl plank throughout entire house
New cabinet pulls
New sink, faucet, and laminate counter tops

What we haven't decided is what to do with the cabinets. Gel stain or paint? If paint, white or a color?

What would you recommend?
