Fireplace Surround Advice Needed

I have a fireplace that has a very dirty and stained black metal surround.  This is the part that has vents and the glass doors are attached to it.  Basically the face of the insert.  We surrounded this with new stone work, but the black metal looks bad.  Not sure if we should attempt to paint it with black metal paint or clean it.

Any suggestions on cleaning products or paint brands that you may have used for a similar situation?  I don't want to use anything that might make it look even worse.  Also, is there any where to find a deal on new glass doors?  Prices seem through the roof for these things especially if you have a smaller less common size.

I cleaned the inside and surround of the one in our flip house with krud kutter and rinsed  with water. I wiped it with a sponge and had to change my water about 10 times. The inside of that fireplace was a pale brick.   When I was done I painted the inside with a black paint for fireplaces. You can also clean the glass and metal part and then tape off the glass and spray paint it.
