Painting Exterior Brick

Does anyone have experience painting exterior brick? I have seen some nice rehabs in my area that turned out well but have never done it myself. Is there a special paint, any recommendations on colors, sheen, or cost effective alternatives? I also have a fireplace with gas insert that could use it as well. Thanks!
