Self directed IRA or 401k to invest internationally

Hi, first question in this forum. I know the subject has been talked about quite a bit, but I'd like to hear what the experts recommend for my particular case. I've done fairly well with my IRA, and I have $250k I would like to invest in international markets because I can buy so much more overseas than in the US. I've done well, because i was able to manage my own money, and I intend to do the same with my real estate. Question is, can i open a self directed 401k for that purpuse, or is my only choice an SD IRA? Thanx in advance for your input.
