Renovating a Multifamily for Rental

We just bought a duplex built in 1821.  It is has been well maintained over the years.  It DOES need a new coat of paint, spackle, smoothing out, etc.  We are aware of the lead paint issues that come with a home of this age, but planned on handling it ourselves.  (It has not been tested though)  We are now seeing that because it is not our primary residence, that before we can do any work on the walls, we need to take a training course and possibly need some certifications.  Is anybody familiar with what the rules are/certifications required, at least on the federal level, for what I need to do as an investor/ DIY-er? We are in Maine.
