Flipping and selling vs flipping and renting

In the next few years I plan to get involved in real estate investing once I have enough equity built in my home to pay for a down payment. There are two areas that interest me. Those include flipping and selling and flipping and keeping as a rental, cashing out equity in a year or two to buy the next fixer upper rental. My question is which method would be best to start out with? And how long should I wait to cash in on my homes equity? I've been living in my current home for 8 months. I figured about 5 years.
