Adding a new address

Just purchased a property that is zoned as a single family with a single address, however it is configured as 2 units with separate entrances. We intend to occupy one and rent the other. Can I petition the post office for an A/B address? Or is that not possible without rezoning the house as multifamily?

@Chad Lower I would contact the local city/county and ask them how this is accomplished. There typically needs to be a separate municipal address first.  Its not really something that the post office does.

If you city will not allow it, the second unit is not likely legal (this is something that you should ave found out before purchasing).

Like @Don Meinke stated, the other option would be using "A" "B", "1/2", "Rear", etc in the second address. Generally the postal workers will figure out the correct mailbox to put it in, regardless if its a legal address.
