Building a new home in NYC

Hi everyone,

I own a house in Queens, NY that is fully paid off. I am interested in building a new home on the property. I need some guidance on what the appropriate steps are to get this job done. After speaking with a few architects, it was suggested that I first get my land surveyed, then work with an architect, then hire a general contractor. Does this sound right? All input into navigating this process would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for the excellent feedback!

I feel like one item that I'm missing is the budget. I have no idea how much this is going to cost and it seems like I won't know until I get into the design phase with the architect but by then I'll already be on the hook for a decent amount of money. Are there any resources to estimate this project? I'd like to build a 3 family unit and I'm going to live there so defiantly higher quality.
