Do you need to work for a company do do BPO or on your own?

I wanted to start doing BPO but I am not sure where to start.  I am not sure if I need to work for another company to perform a BPO or can I start doing them on my own.  If I can start doing them on my own, do I need any particular software.    Any advise would be gladly appreciated.
