Becoming a Property Inspector

Has anyone ever considered becoming a certified property inspector to help cut the costs of having a general inspection done on each piece of property you're interested in? I've been looking into it and it seems like it could be well worth it to learn how to inspect homes myself, rather than potentially wasting money inspecting properties that don't pan out. I've read that a general inspection can cost anywhere from $200-$500! This could simplify and speed up the process of sifting through potential investments. Anyone have thoughts or experience relating to this?
