Vendor Payment Issue

I have been working with a kitchen cabinet installer.  I have worked with them in the past with no issues.  This time they mis-cut my refrigerator panels which caused an over month long delay in finishing my kitchen.  When they were finally complete, I asked how I could pay them and they suggested by check so I wrote them a check.  A few hours later he texted me saying he lost the check and I should cancel it.  I panicked as I didn't write down the check number.  I called my bank and guessed at the check number but because I didn't know for sure I can't be sure it has been cancelled.  The vendor has been texting me non stop asking me to zelle him the money but the whole thing feels a little fishy to me.  Thoughts or suggestions?
