Flex line to furnace - Calling all Plumbers

This is more of a "principal" issue than a "fight-the-city/utility" post. Does the City of Chicago code require hard piping to furnaces? I know (rather, I think) icc requires that flex line for gas not pass through appliance housings or walls. My gas line went from hard-piped valve, to flex, to hard pipe, into furnace and connected to the solenoid. That to me met code, but peoples gas said no way, the run to the furnace has to be hard piped per code.

I have a threader and pipe so it wasn't that big of a deal to resolve. But its more of a future-possible-issue and the principle of it. Am I right that I can flex line it from a valve less than 3ft from the furnace, to a connection point outside the furnace? Or does Chicago have an overlay from the ICC code? Or is my understanding of ICC totally incorrect?

Also, I've found a couple Lowe's in the suburbs offering the 150' rolls of gas line on clearance, for an awesome price. Can this be used in the city? It'd make doing some renovations a ton easier not having to run the hard black pipe.
