Be, Do, Have

Be, Do, Have

The vast majority of people believe that if they “have” a thing (more time or money) then they will be able to “do” a thing (start a business; build a relationship; buy a home; travel, etc), which will allow them to finally “be” a thing (happy, content, peaceful, loving, etc). The reality is that “having” in no way produces “being”. First you must be happy, content, peaceful, loving, etc. and then you will begin operate from a place of being that will then cause you to have the things you’ve always wanted.

Therefore, I do not want you to make the mistake of beginning by asking the question, “What do I do?” Asking that question is how you got to where you are today, and if I may be so bold, if you were happy with your results so far, you wouldn’t be reading this. That’s the reason that most peoples’ lives consist of things to do. I happen to think you’ve got enough to do! If you’re going to develop a business that revolves around you, you’re going to have to start with asking a different question. It is not what you need to do to live the lifestyle of your dreams, but who you need to be to build a business that creates that lifestyle.

You didn't get into REI because you were looking to trade your 9 to 5 for a 7 to 7, did you? You weren't merely looking for just another job, were you? Building an income stream or streams that revolve around you begins with who you are in the first place. What are your core beliefs, and where does your passion lie? What do you like to do? What would you do tomorrow and there was nothing constraining you? What would you do differently if you had all the time and money to do anything you could think up? What kind of person are you right now? Is this who you always wanted to be?

If you’re not sure about the answers to those questions, that’s OK. One of the reasons for writing this is to inspire you to think on who you are and who you’d like to become.
