Turning a single family home into 3 units?

My name is Tommy I’m 22, from Chicago and brand new to real estate. My dad and I were talking about finding single-family home that we could turn into three units. So a basement big enough to put two bedrooms and a kitchen. the main floor two bedrooms and a kitchen and the third-floor one bedroom and a kitchen. We would look for a single-family house that already has the main floor ready to rent out as a two bedroom. And if the house is big enough to do something like this. We are both carpenters so we would do the work ourselves he thinks it’s a really good idea. Does anyone have an idea on if this would be a good move for me as a first deal? Would really appreciate all the help I can get!
