Search for penthouse/attic apartment

Hi all, 

I will begin my search for a suitable attic/penthouse apartment. I think the best option would be to find a attic that is not in use and transform this into a dream apartment. 

Does anyone have some good idea to how to find this attic?

My idea is to:

• Use Google Earth to find potential attics 
• Find information about the owners of the other apartments in the building
• Contact these owners through direct mail

Any good ideas or feedback?
