Beachfront Investing in Texas

We cashed in on 2 properties in San Diego, California and moved to Frisco, Texas where we're building our dream house. We want to take some of our remaining profit and invest in a beachfront vacation rental that we can use ourselves and rent out most of the year. The wife is hot on Galveston, but I hear mixed feedback. Is this a good area or where else should we consider for a good oceanfront investment. We're capable of flipping a property or doing some DIY upgrades and our budget is up to $500k for at least 2+ bedrooms.
