Post 2: Looking up Tax Maps for Jersey City

This is the 2nd post in my series about online tools useful for investing in Jersey City.

You can check out 1st post here: Jersey City Online Tools Post 1: Tax Assessment records

The Tax Maps for Jersey city are available here:

http://hostedfiles.civilsolutions.biz/jerseycity/taxmaps/index.htm

They are maintained by the company Civil Solutions, a division of ARH Associates.

215 Bellevue Ave, Hammonton, NJ 08037, Ph: 800-924-0482 www.arh-us.com or www.civilsolutions.biz

Here is a screenshot of the search navigation at the top.

You need to first select, how you want to find a property via selecting the radio buttons.

In the screenshot above, I have selected "Address".

Then in the dark green row, select County = Hudson, Municipality = Jersey City and then the fun beings.

"Street" - now we know Jersey City only has 1 Grove Street. However, because of the way data is classified, you see 3 Grove Street's.

  • Grove St with no full stop.
  • Grove St. with full stop
  • Grove Street (street spelled out fully)

It is a game of finding the needle in the haystack. As you select a particular Grove Street, the "HNo" aka House Number drop down changes.

So if your House Number of choice doesn't show up, then it is probably in the other version of Grove Street.

e.g. 280 Grove Street (City Hall) is only available in the 3rd option "Grove Street", not in "Grove St" or "Grove St."

Searching by Block & Lot can be a better way to find things versus searching by address. You can find the Block and Lot by the Tax Assessment record search in my first post.

I'll pull up a map for "Grove St"

I have highlighted a few things in different colors.

- In Yellow shows the "Map Sheet Number" - so we are looking at Map Sheet Number 129.

- In Red, you can see which "Map sheet number" you need to pull up if you want to look at addresses along a particular street.

So, if you want to head "west" / "left" along Christopher Columbus Dr, look up Sheet 127.

If you want to head "north" / "up" along Newark Ave, look up Sheet 130

- In Orange, are the "block" numbers" - 12901, 12902, 12903, 12904, 12905, 12906 and each "box" is a specific "lot" number.

So the corner of "Christopher Columbus Dr" & "Barrow St" is block 12901 and lot 1, the address is 143 COLUMBUS DR.

and you can see all this information in the "Tax Assessment" records of that address as well

http://tax1.co.monmouth.nj.us/cgi-bin/m4.cgi?district=0906&l02=090612901____00001_________M

In the link above, you can see, district 0906 = Jersey City, 12901 is the block, 00001 is the lot number.

So there you go, you should now be able to pull up tax maps and make sure that the house you are buying the right size.

The "normal" lot size in Jersey City is a 25x100 lot. 25 feet street facing, 100 feet deep.

But there are tons of odd lot sizes because of the shapes of the streets as well as historical lot partitions.

Enjoy!
