Outer Banks, NC beach house rental

I'm planning to take my family to the Outer Banks late this summer. We want to rent an oceanfront house for a week. Probably in September. Budget is $1500-2500. Or more for something special. Kids are ages 2-20. We love the beach/ocean and will do more of that than shopping or eating out. Where are the nice areas? Areas to avoid? Other things to know?
