Am I the only one who likes hearing someone acknowledge another with "Yes Sir or Yes Ma'am"? I don't know a single friend who opens the car door of their lover. Are we so busy that we can't respect those around us.

Just a thought.

We will have to agree to disagree for sure. I guess I come from a traditional background. I do many things everyday that are based on some history of practicality or belief that does not exist anymore, but I still find value in doing them. A great example is my life in the military. The modern military salute is said to have descended from the knights, as their commanding officer would lift his hand to his helmet to reveal his face, as his soldiers often had never seen what he looked like before. Today, there is no practical need for a military salute, as rank is worn on every uniform, but the tradition of saluting and returning salutes lives strong, as a mutual show of respect.

I have never opened a door for a woman because I thought she could not do it herself, my wife has two hands that function properly… I do it because it is a small token of appreciation and respect. I have also opened the door for tons of women and have never had anyone say anything negative; in fact, I usually get a “thank you”, especially from the ladies. The victories of feminism are undeniable and well-established, so I hope and doubt many women are offended by opening of a door and if they are, I simply will not open it for them next time.

I agree that times have changed but I think making the assumption that women want to be treated in a less chivalrous way to avoid being portrayed as weak is a poor one. Maybe it is because of where I live, how I was raised or who I interact with or a combination, but I will continue to open doors for the ladies.
Note: This comes from a guy who uses a razor from the 1960s, listens to Jazz, serves in the military, drinks Manhattans and eats home cooked meals most nights…I guess I am just old school.
