Convert an employer sponsored 401k to self directed IRA

Just curious if anyone has any experience with this topic.

I have an employer sponsored 401k. My employer matches my contributions up to a certain amount. I have a fixed choice of investments I can choose from.

Is there a way that I can convert this somehow to a self directed IRA? I just was thinking of it so I can invest in RE. Just curious if that's even possible.
