How to enter loan origination work part-time?

Has anyone working full time in a completely different profession started their MLO work part-time successfully as a second job? Any advice on how to find a mentor and/or seasoned mortgage broker who would be willing to hire and train? I have potential clients in both MD and CA. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.
