Buying Vs. Building

Hi BP my name is Jimmy and I want to get into real estate investing. Right now I work for a home builder in North Dakota as a Drafter. I wanted to know if anybody has any advice on buying an existing home vs. building a new one. I want to buy rental properties. Right now I am looking at building a duplex to house hack. One of the perks of my job is every 2 years I work here I can buy a house for 2% over cost in stead of the usual markup. I wanted to know if anybody has advice on the different expense I might see from a new home vs. a rebuilt one. Thanks.
