title for boat and trailer

5 years ago a gentleman owed my father some money so he left his boat in the backyard. Since that day the gentleman has not been seen or heard from, it's been 5 years and no way to get in contact with him. The boat needs work but we are willing to put in the time and money into it. I do not want to start this project until I have the title for both the boat and trailer. I was wondering how to go about getting the titles? The boat was never registered with the gentleman as well but he does hold the title. Givin he is a troubled man we are not sure if he is in Va. or even alive. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
