Local city inspections

We just received a letter for a new proposal by our local city government wanting to inspections on all of the rental properties, for a fee of course.  My question, have any of you encountered this and if so, what has been your experience (s). Good, bad, other.  I'm open minded to this, other than the cost.  If anyone is interested I'll give some numbers as to the cost.  I just don't like the fact to yet another cost.  I'm all for safety, but if this extends to landscaping then how does that go into safety? With any government, usually starts out small and then turns into a monster.  Please your thoughts
