Termination of contract

So I'm giving a 30 day notice to terminate contract. But tenant hasn't been in the unit for at least 3 weeks. I'm not sure if he is coming back. Do I just leave notice in the door or do I also sent by email? Not sure what to do. I'm in Illinois
