How to invest in a holdings group?

I am wondering how to find people or investors who invest as part of a holdings group? My ex would do this but he's in another state. He and others in a group worked with an investor who would find properties in other countries to invest in and also invest in local stores or buy those stores. Any guidance on how to do this would be much appreciated! either to be part of a holdings group to invest money in or to be the main investor in charge of finding properties and the like.
