Moving to Indiana soon
Hello,
Took a job in west Lafayette. Any recommendations on where to look for a home. Have 3 young children. Budget is broad but 400 min 700 max. I know that sounds crazy but the cost difference isn’t actually that much per month given the low property taxes. Plan on living there 6-7 years before buying our forever home. Prefer north of west Lafayette as far as St. John.
Any recommendations?
Eddie
I know the Greater Lafayette (Lafayette & West Lafayette, IN) real estate market very well. Let me know how I can be of assistance. - Don
We moved from Chicago to Crown Point last year. We got a nice house for around $500k. Twice as big and less expensive than the house we moved out of - you will appreciate how far your money goes here.
However I don't think you would want to have to drive from St. John to WL. (a) St. John is booming but IMHO it has no soul, and (b) it's a really boring drive. If you WERE willing to drive 90 minutes each way, I'd strongly suggest looking at Valpo instead. College town, great downtown, very livable.
I think you will be happiest closer to West Lafayette. Even though it's full of Purdue fans.
West Lafayette and St. John commute makes no sense. At least Crown Point is right off of I-65 but still, that's a terrible commute. Do you work from home a lot?
I’m a physician, work 7 ten hour days a week. Off 27 weeks a year.
I have three kids at home. I don’t mind a drive to decompress.
Agree with @Marcin Nurek on this. St. John is too far off of I-65 and will add another 15-20 minutes to your commute. Crown Point is a great area especially if you can find something close to I-65. Great schools for your kids too! Other than that, not much between Crown Point and Lafayette if you are looking for some action (restaurants, activities, etc)
Agreed. I’m definitely biased on Crown Point, but it’s an amazing community. The growth with residential, commercial, and in our downtown is making it a great place to live. All the new restaurants as well as a brand new $35 million, 120,000 square foot health and fitness center with the new YMCA. 10 star schools and easy access to I-65 either way. The property values are great and so are taxes.
If you decide to move to West Lafayette, be aware that not all of West Lafayette is in the West Lafayette school district. http://www.wl.k12.in.us/info/s... With your price range, in West Lafayette I would look at the areas north of Meridian St. and near Happy Hollow park.
Commuting an hour or so on I-65 after working a ten hour day sounds miserable to me.
I-65 is awful.
@EJ K. - We are about to make a similar move to the West Lafayette area. I started looking here on BP and found your post a year later. Where did you end up finding a house, and what factors led you to the decision?
Hi @Shane Miller I ended up choosing to commute from Saint John down there.
We wanted to keep our nanny, non-compete for doctors sucks (if I lived there I would be in Lafayette and driving out 30-50 miles if I left my job), and we wanted to be close to Chicago still.
Where did you end up down there? The market is on fire.
@EJ K. Sorry for the delay. We ended up settling on the north side of West Lafayette. Just getting moved in this month. Loving it so far.
