Tips for laying the ground work in the planning stage.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for someone who is laying the groundwork to get into investing? My husband and I are taking the steps to get our credit where we want it and save up money for a down payment on a vacation rental. I have a pension and he has a 401k but we both know that this will not be enough for us to live the lifestyle we want when we retire. We are just in our 40’s and want to set ourselves up for success. I have spent the past 3 months reading anything I can get my hands on. (The whole thing started after reading “Rich Dad Poor Dad”) We know it will be some time before we are ready to make the move and purchase our first vacation rental home but is there anything that you wish you had done or learned beforehand while preparing to make the jump? Thank you in advance for any info you may provide.
