Intro and path forward
Hello all,
TLDR intro- I'm JC. Wife is the surgeon breadwinner. I'm a stay at home dad working to learn how to protect and grow our wealth as we move out of debt and into wealth. Former cop, now doing some acting, day trading, private piloting, and wanting to delve into real estate. Goals- long term wealth protection and growth, later followed by income generation, and maybe delusions on grandeur after that. Initial desires- as hands off as possible until I can learn more. Readings to date: How to Invest in Real Estate by Josh and Brandon (completed), The Hands Off Investor by Brian Burke (in process), The Real Book of Real Estate by Robert Kiyosaki (on deck). Podcasts on listen- Bigger Pockets obviously, The Real Estate Rookie, Passive Real Estate Investing.
And longer-
So hello, I'm JC and I'm a total real estate investing newbie. As I said, my wife is a surgeon and responsible for our income. I left law enforcement several years ago and have since been exploring all kinds of things to do with my time. I pursue acting, and have had 3 years of what I'd call success. Only 7 more years until I become an overnight success! I'm in TN and do most of my acting training in Atlanta. Around the beginning of 2020, I decided I wanted to learn more about ways to protect and grow the money my wife was making for us and become much more financially and economically savvy. I started to learn some day trading (mostly simulated even now) and have met with mixed success. It's something I will continue to do and become better at. I've recently begun the path towards a private pilot's license, both for pleasure and for the potential future business use. And hey, it's a good skill set to have. My fascination with real estate has been low level but always there for a while I guess. But I am finally taking active steps to learn about building up a real estate portfolio.
Initially, I'm leaning towards the more hands-off stuff, which from what I've read so far, is more turn-key (ala REI) or note investing. There is a nice appeal to me of saying, "here's some money. you're the expert. let me invest it with you and you do your thing and I'll make some money." Plus in my former life, I dealt with too much landlord/tenant eviction crap to be excited about that arena. I realize that cops don't get called to deal with the 99% of people who aren't causing problems, but it surely has left me jaded. But I want to learn the avenues that will allow me to best protect and grow our wealth and income generation is a secondary interest.
So, thank you in advance for your advice, input, expertise, and all the knowledge I'm surely going to plagiarize!
