Starting my Real Estate journey in Dallas, TX

Hey BiggerPockets!

My name is Jesse, I'm 33 and from the North Texas area. I’m very excited to write this introduction because I have been lurking for quite a long time. Like many people, I read the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad at the age of 26 while I was in a career that I hated and spending everything I earned on things I didn't need. That book really flipped the switch in my mind and started me down a path that I couldn't have imagined at the time.

Shortly thereafter, I sold the new car, the video game systems, the TV...Hell, I sold everything. I stopped going out on weekends, buying overpriced drinks, and started preparing all of my own meals at home. I went from spending every dime that I made to saving as much as I could and spending my free time reading books, educating myself, and exercising. After two years, I had saved $42,000.

So, I took that money and bought my first property, right?

WRONG!

I quit my job and traveled the world...for the next two years.

My journey took me to over 20 countries, from hitchhiking in Scotland to living on a remote island in Cambodia. I learned so much while immersed in these different cultures and connected with hundreds of interesting people along the way, including many digital nomads.

Growing up in rural Texas, I wasn’t exposed to many wealthy or what I’d consider successful people. Meeting people on the road who were retired at 45, or generating 50k/month running Amazon FBA businesses from their laptops was mind-blowing to me. This helped further open my eyes to vastly different ways of life compared to how I’d been living all these years before.

I spent the next few years trying my hand at several different e-commerce businesses. I didn’t make a lot of money on these pursuits, but I did learn a lot about business, sourcing, designing, and marketing products. Ultimately, I was able to leverage these skills (with a little more polishing) into a career as a Product Designer in the tech industry.

Despite all of these varying pursuits, I never forgot about Rich Dad, Poor Dad, or the idea of real estate investing.

Fast forward to today, I am working and growing in a rewarding career that I really enjoy and am excited to start getting my hands dirty. I recently purchased my first property, a 3 BD 2 BA Townhome here in Dallas. I am currently using this as my primary that I share with my girlfriend and two cats "Noodle" and "Chopstix". I'm planning to house hack the 2 spare rooms soon to start learning the in's and out's of being a landlord and to help me save for my next property.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading all of that! I’m stoked to be a part of this community and look forward to meeting you all, learning as much as I can, giving what I can, and continuing to grow, not only in real estate but overall!

Thanks,

Jesse
