Rental Property Beginnings

Good morning all,

I am currently serving in the military and I have possession of a VA Loan. I have a Real Estate "mentor" but we don't talk as often as I'd like to. He advised me to use my VA Loan to purchase a duplex/triplex, live in one and rent out the other(s). I was wondering if anyone could provide me with insight on how exactly this process would unfold.
